FAQs about Psychotherapy
Contact UsFind answers to some common questions about our psychotherapy practice below.
How should I prepare for therapy sessions?
There is nothing you need to do to prepare. Booking the appointment and attending are the first steps. Our therapists are trained to guide you through the process of therapy, and they will be by your side every step of the way. You don’t have to do this alone. Just come and be where you are.
Do I need to bring anything to therapy?
It’s a good idea to bring a bottle of water with you. We ask you to take off your shoes, so please have socks with you. Best not to wear mascara, as therapy can be emotional, and it’s not unusual to cry.
Should I have more time to myself after therapy?
Everyone is different, and every therapy session is different. If you think you will need more time to yourself after your session, please book accordingly.
What should I be doing outside of therapy sessions?
Your therapist will discuss with you expectations for doing “your work” outside of the therapy sessions. Practices are individually designed to assist you to deepen and strengthen the gains made in the therapy session.
Can I access my therapy notes?
The therapist makes notes about your therapy session progress. Please speak to your therapist should you want to see your notes.
How many appointments should I book?
We like to book your appointments for 6 months, that way you are committing to your therapy and a schedule that works for you, with the option to cancel at any time with 24 hours’ notice. Our therapists review their schedules in the fall to book your appointments between January and June and again in the spring to book your appointments between July and December.
Should I attend appointments with my child/teen?
For children 13 and under, we expect that the parents/guardians book an appointment first to discuss the challenges being experienced. We ask that a consent form be completed which details the risks/benefits of children in therapy and parent/guardian responsibilities. The therapist will evaluate the need for parents to be present during therapy. Teens aged 14 to 18 can attend therapy alone if they wish.
What do I do if I’m feeling uncomfortable in therapy?
It takes time to build trust with your therapist; therefore, it’s not unusual to feel discomfort during therapy sessions. Don’t be afraid to talk to your therapist if you are having these feelings. They can then work with you to build trust in your relationship.
How do I pay for my therapy session?
You pay for your therapy session on the day of your appointment. We accept payment via credit card, debit card, and cash. All clients must have a valid credit card on file. We like to take payment at the start of the therapy session, so you can leave immediately after your session. We recognize that sessions can be difficult, and the last thing you want to do is discuss payment at the end of a session.
Do you direct bill insurance companies through my benefits?
We do not offer direct billing with insurance companies. You will receive an emailed receipt after each therapy session. If you require an annual statement for tax purposes, please contact our office at info@cpyc.ca.
What if I need to cancel my appointment?
Sometimes, things come up, and you need to cancel your appointment. That’s ok, but please provide 24 hours’ notice; otherwise, you will incur the full cost of the session. Please call or email your therapist if you are canceling on the day of your appointment.
How do I access my client account?
When clients book their first therapy session, they should receive a “welcome email” from Jane. This will then allow you to create your own login/password, complete consent forms, review your upcoming appointments, schedule or cancel appointments, and add payment details. You can always call the office if you would like assistance in scheduling your appointments.
Where are all my details held?
We use a secure and confidential client platform called Jane. This is where we create client accounts, schedule your appointments, and take payments and where therapists chart notes. All our record keeping is held in our secure client platform “Jane.” You can read more about privacy, confidentiality and security in our policy on our website.
Is all my information, including discussions, confidential?
Yes, completely. All discussions in therapy are confidential, unless you pose an imminent danger to yourself, another person, or are unable to handle your own mental illness. When that happens, therapists may break the confidentiality agreement in order to safeguard you and others. We also work as a team and have regular group clinical supervision and may share details of clients.
Can you link my client file with other people who I may be in therapy with?
Yes, we can add “relationships” to client accounts. For example, if you are in couples’ therapy or your child is in therapy, we can add a “relationship,” so we know how clients are connected.
Can I pay for another person’s therapy?
Yes, when we link “relationships” in your account, we can also add “permissions” in Jane. When you want to pay through Jane for other people who are linked to you by relationship, we can then take payment. You must authorize us to add these permissions. If you are not paying through Jane, we can accept payment on the payment machine with any credit/debit card and accept cash.
